In this talk we will introduce a new proof of the Catalan Conjecture. This is a recent result, with Chang Liu, and it use the discovery of certain hidden multiplicative characters, which allow to avoid the use of Thaine's theorem and work in the minus part of the class group.

个人简介：

Preda Mihailescu，德国哥廷根大学教授。于1975年至1980年在瑞士ETH Zürich 学习数学，后留校攻读博士学位，1983年至1986年在瑞士的Brown Boveri 电力公司从事数值和软件分析方面的工作，1988年至2000年在瑞士的各个银行和私人公司从事安全和密码顾问的工作，开发过指纹识别系统。1997年在瑞士 ETH Zürich 获得博士学位，2000年至2002年在德国 Paderborn 大学从事学术研究，并于2002年解决了具有158年历史的 Catalan 猜想而获得教授职位。2005年转入德国哥廷根大学。他主要从事代数数论和类域论（Iwasawa 理论）方面的研究，也从事计算数论和密码学的教学和研究，相关研究成果主要发表在 《Crelle》、《Math. Comp.》、《Acta Arith.》、《J. Number Theory》等期刊上。
