Abstract:  We give a general, direct explicit construction of lower-bounded generalized twisted modules for a grading-restricted vertex (super)algebra associated to an automorphism of the algebra. Even in the case that theautomorphism is of finite order, finding such a construction has been a long-standing problem in the representation theory of vertex operator algebra orbifold conformal field theory. We obtain lower-bounded generalized twisted modules satisfying a universal propertyso that every lower-bounded generalized twisted moduleis a quotient of such a module. We give a linearly independent set of generators of such a universal twisted module thus solve the long-standing problem on the existence of such twisted modules. We also prove the existence of irreducible grading-restricted generalized twisted modules irreducible ordinary twisted modules under some conditions.
