Let G be a permutation group on a finite set. The fixed point ratio of an element x in G, denoted fpr(x), is the proportion of points fixed by x. Fixed point ratios have been studied for many decades, finding a wide range of applications. In this talk, I will introduce fixed point ratios and I will survey some of the main results, with a focus on the case where G is (almost) simple and primitive. I will also highlight a number of interesting applications, from problems concerning bases for permutation groups to questions on the generation and random generation of finite groups.
个人简介：
Tim Burness，英国布里斯托大学教授。博士毕业于伦敦帝国理工学院。主要研究兴趣包括有限单群和代数单群（特别是子群结构、共轭类和表示理论）、置换群及其相关的组合问题、计算与概率方法在群论中的应用。现为J. Group Theory的共同主编和J. Algebra的编委。其主要研究工作发表在Ann. of Math., J. Eur. Math. Soc., Mem. Amer. Math. Soc., Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., Math. Ann., Adv. Math.等期刊上。
