Abstract:

In order to overcome the challenges posed by the incompatibility between Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), and optimization software used in engineering design, Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) has emerged as the most influential solution. By directly utilizing high-fidelity CAD models in CAE, IGA helps mitigate the time-consuming model/data exchange and compatibility issues caused by geometric models, and may even eliminate them altogether. Nonetheless, IGA faces significant obstacles in dealing with complex geometries in real-world applications, due to the limitations of the current industrial standard for CAD, Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS). The seamless integration of CAD and CAE for complex geometries can be approached through two complementary perspectives: making CAD be analysis-suitable, or making CAE be design-aware. The former changes CAD while retaining CAE, which strives to breaking through the current CAD standard by developing analysis-suitable spline technologies. The latter retains CAD but changes CAE, the key of which is to establish novel boundary-unfitted methods to directly perform analysis on (trimmed) NURBS. From these two perspectives, in this talk I will introduce their respective challenging issues, solution strategies, and latest developments. Moreover, through various applications such as neuronal material transport, automobile engineering, the advection-diffusion problem, and the Stokes problem, I will explore their advantages and prospects.
