Abstract:

Balance indices have been extensively studied for phylogenetic trees, even a book dedicated to them has recently appeared. ("Tree Balance Indices: A Comprehensive Survey", Springer, 1st edition, 2023.) On the other hand, little is known so far about balance indices for phylogenetic networks, which are an extension of phylogenetic trees that have become the main focus of research in recent years in phylogenetics. In this talk, we explain our (stochastic) results for the extension of two well-known balance indices of phylogenetic trees to galled networks, namely, the Sackin index and the B2 index. The talk is based on joint work with F. Bienvenu and J. J. Duchamps (both University de Franche-Comte), B. Gittenberger (TU Wien) and T.-C. Yu (Fu Jen University).
